Application of Profile of the Mood States(POMS) to Study the Mood State of Workers Dealing with Manganese

Abstract
The purposes of this study was to estimate the applicability of Profile of Mood State (POMS) to study the mood states of workers dealing with manganese,
comparing theoretical factorial structures of POMS with those obtained from our questionnaire.
From factor analysis, five mood dimensions were disclosed from the six theoretical dimensions which were adopted by WHO for the study of mood states.
These five dimensions revealed relatively high structural validity because these dimensions explained eighty eight percents of total variance and had high internal consistency. However, reevaluations of tension-anxiety scale and depression-dejection scale among five separated scales were required because tension-anxiety scale and depression-dejection scale had low congruency and depression-dejection items were scattered. In addition, the validity and reliability of the POMS had to be clarified because it was necessary to determine whether several items of low reliability and communality should be included for POMS and the difficulty in understading the meaning of each item of the questionnaires should be resolved.
With five arbitrary scales for the state of manganese exposure, scores of depression-dejection, anger-hostility, tension-anxiety, fatigue-inertia and vigor, we could find the first four scales were significantly increased with the increase of duration of maganese exposure, even after the age and educational levels which were known as confounders were adjusted. Thus, It was suggested that the early symptoms of neurobehavioral disorders described above appeared to be caused by exposure to manganese. However, for clear exposure-response relationship, manganese exposure and POMS scores, we should find some ways for manganese exposure assessment in the future.
